    Notes:

    Name:
He took the Colonial oath at Haverhill 28 Nov. 1677. His father conveyed to him property in Haverhill thus recorded 14 July, 1673:

" To my sonne Joseph Williams my now dwelling house, out housing, house lott, oarcheard and hopp years, ye are upon ye sd lott, together with eight commonages weh I have in ye sd towne of Haverhill, and also yt pcell of ox comon land wch was layd out to me beyond the fishing river towards the saw mill, and also my Duck meadow wch is bounded at ye south end with two oakes and at ye north end with a swamp."

This is evidently the same property which the father had willed to him in 1670.

Many years later "Joseph Williams of Norwich sold property in Haverhill inherited from his father."

After the birth of his youngest child in 1683 his name is found no more in the records of Haverhill. The next trace of him is gathered from the archives of Norwich, Conn. Here he settled on Poquetannock Cove, Brewster's Neck, on the extreme boundary line of the southern limits of old Norwich, east of The Thames, just within what was comprehended in the original Indian grant of the 'nine miles square tract."...

Every newcomer who succeeded in being publicly accepted obtained a grant of land comprising a building lot, pasture ground, and woodland sufficient for a family. So, in 1702, we learn that a vote was taken at a town meeting of Norwich, putting certain names on the Roll as an addition to its inhabitants, and in the number Joseph Williams was enteres as "a wholeshare man respecting lands. In 1703 he was a member of the first Congregational church of Norwich The Norwich town records mention many reaal-estate transactions of Joseph Williams, which show that he was a man in prosperous circumstances and that his business interests were in partnership with his son John. He as well as his son received lands in return for contributions to the meeting-house. A roll of landed proprietors is given in 1718, which mentions him; and the record of a deed bearing date of March, 1719, is in his name. In 1720, the year of his wife's death, he is referred to as deceased. He left but one son to carry down the Williams name.

Joseph married Mary FULLER on 18 Nov 1674 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Mary (daughter of Samuel FULLER and Jane LOTHROP) was born in Scituate, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts; was christened on 16 Jun 1644; died on 11 Nov 1720 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  1. 4.  John WILLIAMS was born in abt. 1600 in England or Wales; died on 10 Feb 1674 in Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts.

    Notes:

    Name:
In 1642, John Williams was admitted freeman: that is, he was made an acknowledged citizen of the place, was a member of the church, had a full right to vote on any and all questions, and had taken the oath of fidelity and allegiance. In 1643, according to a town vote, the valuation of his property was put at eighty pounds, which compares favorable with that of the 31 other land owners. Every stockholder who emigrated at his own expense was to receive fifty acres for each member of his family; and every fifty pounds contributed to the company's stock entitled the stockholder to two hundred acres of land. In the 4th division of land, 14 oct., 1659, John Williams drew the 4th lot. In 1667 he again received a share in the distribution of some lands belonging to the town, which confirms the statement that he was one of the original proprietors, and to be such he must have been in possession of means brought from the old country. He also owned other property in Haverhill, some of which he gave to his sons during his lifetime.

John williams passed the residue of his days in Haverhill, dying there 10 Feb., 1674; his widow Jane surviving until 21 Nov., 1680. Notes:

    Name:
Edward Fuller, his wife, and son Samuel came to Plymouth on the MAYFLOWER in 1620. Edward was one of those who signed the Mayflower Compact on 11 November 1620.

Governor Bradford's account of the MAYFLOWER'S passengers, written early in 1651, lists among the passengers "Edward Fuller, and his wife; and Samuell their sonne." Bradford further states: "Edwrd ffuller, and his wife dyed soon after they came ashore; but their sonne Samuel is living, and married and hath 4 children or more.

Edward Fuller was baptized at the parish of Redenhall, County of Norfolk, England on 4 September 1575, son of Robert Fuller. While some accounts make him the son of Frances, who is named in Robert's will, a convincing case has been made that Frances was the second wife of Robert Fuller, and that Robert Fuller married first, at Starston Parish, Norfolk, England, 29 January 1572/3 Sara Dunkhorn and that she is the mother of Edward and Samuel Fuller of the MAYFLOWER. Sara Fuller, wife of Robert Fuller, was buried at Redenhall 1 July 1584. Redenhall and Starston are adjacent parishes.

The will of Robert Fuller of the parish of Redenhall, yeoman, dated 19 May 1613, proved 31 May 1614 by the widow, and 16 June 1614 by Thomas Fuller, names wife Frances; sons Edward Samuel and Thomas; daughters Ann fuller, Elizabeth Fuller and Mary Fuller; grandson John Fuller, son of his son John Fuller

Edward Fuller and his unnamed wife were among the English Separatists living in Leiden, Holland. Edward is mentioned in Leiden Judicial Archives 79, L, Folio 172 verso.

Savage calls his wife Ann, but there is no known evidence that this was her name.

There has long been a question as to whether Mathew Fuller was actually a son of Edward. For a full detailed discussion of Matthew Fuller's parentage, see the article "Was Matthew Fuller of Plymouth Colony a Son of Pilgrim Edward Fuller?" which confirms the relationship.

    Notes:

    Name:
He matriculated at Queen's College, Cambridge, 1601; M.A., 1606; was perpetual curate of Egerton, 48 m. S.E. of London. In 1623, he renounced this living and espoused in violation of the law. He was arrested with many of his congregation, Apr. 22, 1632. he wife died while he was in prison. After this event, his children visited the Archbishop, who took pity on them, releasing their father, provided he would go to New England. He arrived at Boston, Sept. 18, 1634, in company with 32 of his congregation; others of it having preceded him. (Atwater's New Haven, p. 39.) He immediately located at Scituate, where he was warmly welcomed and a house for his family of "meane proportions", was quickly built by willing hands. Mr. Otis describes it thus: "The walls were made of poles filled between with stones and clay, the roof thatched, the chimney to the mantel, of rough stone and above of cob work, the windows of oiled paper and the floor of hand sawed planks." Of the beginnings of his work, there is a record by Dr. Stiles of Yale. In October, 1639, he with a large number of his congregation removed to Barnstable, bringing with them the crops they had raised at Scituate. He was a strong man and an independent thinker, holding views far in advance of his tie, which he fearlessly proclaimed in both the old and new worlds. It has been said of him: "No pastor was ever more beloved by his people and one ever had a greater influence for good." He is accounted one of the great religious fathers of New England.
