    Notes:

    Name:
Little Compton vol. 2, editor's note: Edward Southworth was a sill worker in Leyden andone of the Pilgrim exiles who formed the Rev. John Robinson's church. It is not known what part of England he came from but in my journey to England in 1923 I visited Wellam in Notts and found the baptisms of an Edward Southworth with brothers Robert and Thomas. I have an idea that they came from this town but it has not been proven. He died in London about 1621.

After his death Governor Bradford of Plymouth sent for his widow, Alice Carpenter, whom he had known in England and married her in New England. There is much more on Edward Southworth given in the Southworth genealogy by Samuel G. Webber, but let it be understood that up to this time it has never been proved that he came from the celebrated Southworth family of Lancashire, although much work has been done on this family in England--BFW.

Edward married Alice CARPENTER on 28 May 1613. Alice (daughter of Alexander CARPENTER and ? UNKNOWN) was born in abt. 1590 in England; died on 26 Mar 1670 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The will of William Lister, probated in 1582, desires that he "be buried according to the Church of England." The will mentions the testator's son-in-law, Thomas Southworth, as the son of Sir John Southworth. With Thomas Southworth, , his son-in-law, the testator left annuities for his four children, including Sir Matthew Lister, physician to King Charles I.

Thomas Southworth had become a Protestant by 1584,for which reason his father, Sir John, a moderate Catholic, threatened to disinherit him.

Thomas married Rosamond LISTER in bet. 1563-1571. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
