Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Thomas TALMAGE was born in 1587 in Barton Stacey, Hampshire (son of "John Goodmand" TOLLEMACHE and Unknown ?); died before 9 Dec 1653 in Easthampton, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

Excerpt from "The Talmadge, Tallmadge and Talmage Genealogy": He was an Englishman and brother of John Talmadge of Newton Stacey, Hants,.......
Thomas Talmadge came to America 1631, in the ship "Pough", which carried ten passengers. Another report says he came in the fleet with Govenor Winthrop in 1630, (Savage, iv or ix, 252). He landed at Charlestown moved to Boston and then Lynne. May 14, 1634, the "Genall Court" made "Thomas Talmage" a freeman. In 1637 a committee composed of Daniel Howe, Richard Walker and Henry Collins, was appointed to lay out farms, and in 1638 they allotted one of two hundred acres to "Thomas Talmage" and one of twenty acres for "Thomas Talmage his son." On Sept 3, 1640, a letter of attorney by the emigrants seems to have been executed at Boston.
Mr. S.C.N. Talmage in his Talmage Genealogy, 1901, writes that Thomas Lechford was an English lawyer who came to Boston, 1638, and returned to England, 1641. He was the first practising lawyer in Massachusetts and kept a notebook of legal memoranda which has been published and contains these entries, page 294, old 167: "William Talmage, of Boston, in New England, Thomas Talmage, Robert Talmage and Richard Walker, husband of Jane Talmage, deceased, sonnes and daughter of Thomas Talmage, brother of John Talmage of Newton Stacey, in the county of Southampton, deceased, make a letter of attorney to Richard Conying and William Dowlying, overseers of the will of the said John Talmage, deceased, to receive of the executor and administrator of the last will and testament of Symon Talmage, our brother, and of John Talmage, aforesaid, the summes of money due unto us by the will of the said John Talmage (and a certificate under the public seal).....
By order of the court on Mar 7, 1644, the town was divided into four wards and Thomas, Sr., lived in the first, while Thomas Jr., and Robert lived in the second ward. Among the freemen March 8, 1649, is Thomas Talmage, and on May 10, 1649 he was number 13 in the list of Townsmen. He is not in the list of inhabitants 1657, and he must have left about 1650, going to Easthampton, of which his son, Thomas Jr., was one of the founders in 1649. On May 24, 1651, Thomas Talmage, Sr., was fined for absence from Town Meeting at Easthampton. He probably died 1653, for on Dec 9, 1653, the town records show it was "ordered that the share of whale in contraversy between Widowe Talmage shall be divided even as the lott is," and in Feb 1654, Thomas Talmage (no Sr., or Jr. attached to name), was given five acres of land......

In a letter of 8 March 1631/2 the Company of Husbandmen in London inform their members in New England that "Goodman Tamage and his wife take it very unkindly that you should keep his malt and not let his sons have a small quantity of "plattewer' at his request to be paid at return". This confirms that Thomas Talmage was still in England in 1632, but that at least two of his sons had already arrived by that time. We know that William was in New England by this date, and he was probably accompanied by Thomas Junior.

On 11 March 1638/9 Thomas Talmage was one of the inhabitants of Lynn who petitioned the colony government to allow them to build a bridge to pass over the river.

On 7 March 1643/4 Thomas Talmage Sr. was in the first ward with respect to the profits from whales washed up on shore; Thomas Talmage Jr. and Robert Talmage were in the second ward.

The ages given above for the children of the immigrant are all estimates, and so are subject to change. Nevertheless, the gap of seven years between Thomas and Christian is worthy of note, and may indicate that Thomas Talmage had two wives in England.

Some sources give Thomas Talmage a son Davis or David, born about 1630. This seems to be based on two records only. the town records of Easthampton are said to contain an entry that reads "Davis and Thomas Talmage shall have the land granted unto them, " 24 May 1655. this may be simply an incomplete record, in which the first grantee of land has surname Davis, and the first name is lost or omitted. The second record claimed is the death of "David or Davis" in May 1708, aged 78. Without seeing the actual death record, this constitutes very slender support for inclusion as a child of Thomas Talmage. Furthermore, in his will of 23 January 1638/9 John Talmage names the six children of his brother Thomas listed above, but does not names a David or Davis.

Thomas married Unknown ? about 1605 in England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  3. 10.  Thomas NASH was born in England; died on 12 May 1658.

    Notes:

    Name:
According to Berry, he came from Bewdley in Worcestershire. (Gen. and Ped. of Hertfordshire Families, pp. 83-85.) He sailed with the Whitefield party arriving at Quinnipac or New Haven, in July 1639, and was one of the signers of the agreement to remain together made on shipboard. Savage says he was of Guilford in 1639, but this is probably a mistake. (Steiner's History of Guilford, 1897, pp. 23, 29, 48.) New Haven, Col. Rec., (I, p. 82), says: "brother Nash his shoppe did stand by the creeks." He was a gunsmith, and probably well advanced in life at the time of the emigration, for his eldest son, John was old enough to be made Freeman, April, 1642, and in his will of August 1, 1657, he mentions his old age. The first date attached to his name at New Haven, in "1st of the 7th moneth 1640", when he was admitted member of the General Court and received the charge of Freeman. His home lot was on the west side of State Street, about one0third distance from Chapel to Elm St. He was chosen a Fence Viewer "for Mr. Eatons & Mr. Davenports quarter", March 1645/6. May 25, 1646, the General Court ordered: "In regard of severall occasions and worke to be done agaynst trayning day, bro: Nash is spared." Before emigration, he was a member of the church in Leyden, Holland, and was one of five who wrote an interesting letter (given in full on pages 155, 156 & 157 of Vol. 1 of the 4th series of the Mass. Hist. Soc. Coll. 1852.) From there, Nov. 30, 1625, to their brethren in Plymouth, informing them of the death of John Robinson, Pastor of the church which included in its membership the planters in Plymouth as well as those left in Leyden.

Thomas married Margery BAKER. Margery was born in England; died between 11 Feb 1655 and 1 Aug 1657. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Margery BAKER was born in England; died between 11 Feb 1655 and 1 Aug 1657.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Fact: Dau. of Nicholas Baker and Mary Hodgets of Herts, England

    Notes:

    Name:
There is no mention of the wife of Thomas Nash in the records of New Haven, except in the seating of the Meeting House and then her Christian name is not given. But in Berry's County Genealogies and Pedigrees of Hertfordshire, there is an account of the Baker Family, which makes it highly probable that her name was MARGERY and that she was the daughter of NICHOLAS BAKER of Hertfordshire, England. The last time that she is mentioned i the records is in the seating of Feb. 11, 1655, "In ye short seate Good w: Nash ye elder and Rogger Allins wife". (her daughter.) Mrs. Schenck in her History of Fairfield, says she died within two years of her husband.

    Children:
    1. Mary NASH was born in England.
    2. Major John NASH was born in 1615; died on 3 Jul 1678.
    3. Sergt Joseph NASH died in 1678.
    4. 5. Sarah NASH was born in England; died after 1683.
    5. Timothy NASH was born in 1626 in England; died on 13 Mar 1699 in Hadley, Massachusetts.

  5. 12.  Thomas YALE died on 27 Aug 1619.

Thomas married Anne LLOYD about 1612. Anne died after 1659 in London, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 13.  Anne LLOYD died after 1659 in London, England.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Fact: Daughter of George Lloyd, Bishop of Chester, 1604-1615, and Anne Wilkinson of Norwich

    Notes:

    Name:
As every bit of information about this family is of general interest, it is well to state that Cotton Mather in his life of Eaton describes the wife of the Governor as, "A Prudent and Pious widow, the Daughter of the Bishop of Chester." Cotton Mather was undoubtedly personally well acquainted with the Governor and his wife, hence his statement, as to the character and parentage of Anne Lloyd-Yale-Eaton, is of the highest authority.

It is claimed that Mrs. Eaton returned to England with hr son David Yale, in 1659. the date or place of her death has not been learned, but she probably died in London where David resided until in the year 1665.

    Children:
    1. David YALE was born in 1613 in Chester, England; died on 14 Jan 1690 in Plas Grono, Wales.
    2. Ann YALE was born in 1615 in Chester, England; died on 14 Dec 1698 in Plas Grono, Wales.
    3. 6. Thomas YALE was born in 1616 in Chester, England; died on 27 Mar 1683 in New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut.
    4. Elizabeth/Mary YALE was born about 1618 in Chester, England; died before 15 Aug 1625.
