  1. 1.  Lieut. Samuel SPRAGUE was born about 1670 in Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts (son of John SPRAGUE and Ruth BASSETT); died on 25 Jul 1740 in Rochester, Massachusetts.

    Name:
    Samuel Sprague was chosen constable of Duxbury, March 6, 1700, and town clerk, March 16, 1709, which latter post he held but one year. he was probably a carpenter by occupation, as the Town records for 1708 show his receipt for the sum of one hundred and eighty pounds in full for erecting the meeting house in Duxbury. He moved to Rochester, Mass., about 1710; and d. there July 25, 1740, in the 71st year of his age. The widow Ruth Sprague and Noah Sprague were appointed administrators of his estate.

    Samuel married Ruth ALDEN on 29 Nov 1694 in Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA. Ruth (daughter of David ALDEN and Mary SOUTHWORTH) was born about 1674; died on 02 Jul 1758 in Rochester, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    They resided for a time in Marshfield, as the birth of their daughter Ruth is recorded there.

    This John, more likely than John of William, was a Counsellor of Sir Edmund Andros, mentioned in Hutch, i, 354. He was slain in Pierce's fierce fight at Pawtucket in Philip's War, march 26, 1676. His estate was appraised in 1676 and was sworn to by the widow Ruth sprague. She afterwards married ? Thomas. (Plymouth Co., Mass., Probate.) (Ref.
