    Notes:

    Name:
Little Compton vol. 2, editor's note: Edward Southworth was a sill worker in Leyden andone of the Pilgrim exiles who formed the Rev. John Robinson's church. It is not known what part of England he came from but in my journey to England in 1923 I visited Wellam in Notts and found the baptisms of an Edward Southworth with brothers Robert and Thomas. I have an idea that they came from this town but it has not been proven. He died in London about 1621.

After his death Governor Bradford of Plymouth sent for his widow, Alice Carpenter, whom he had known in England and married her in New England. There is much more on Edward Southworth given in the Southworth genealogy by Samuel G. Webber, but let it be understood that up to this time it has never been proved that he came from the celebrated Southworth family of Lancashire, although much work has been done on this family in England--BFW.

There is no mention of his wife, so she probably died before he came over. It has been said that he was not content to share the profit of the enterprise of the Pilgrims without also sharing their hardships. he at once took a prominent position in the young colony. He was made freeman in 1633; in 1634 he was one of the tax assessors, was himself rated at L2.05.00. he was on many committees, for assigning and laying out land, for building a meeting house, on highways, to revise the laws, and with his son-in-law, Constant Southworth, he had the task of looking after Goodwife Thomas, the Welsh woman. he served on the council of war more than once. he was assistant twenty-eight years and was one of the most regular in his attendance, being rarely absent. he was one of the commissioners at the first meeting of the United Colonies in 1643.
