Mary married in 1650 John Sayles, born probably at Charlestown, Massachusetts ay Colony 1630; died in 1681 probably at Middletown third child and first son of John and Phillipa (Soale) Sayles.
In 1675, John and Mary (Williams) Sayles took refuge during King Philip's War at the farm of Peter Easton in Middletown, and there they are believed to have lived until their deaths in 1681. They are buried at Easton Cemetery Historic Cemetery No. 14, Town of Middletown, at the same gravesite as their son-in-law, William Greene. Their hraves are marked by three flat slate stones which were set on a base by Newport Hospital Corporation in the late 1800's. the stones o JohnSayles and William Greene are original. They were restored in 1995 when Mary's stone had to be replaced, since it had been missing for some time. The restoration was accomplished b the Roger Williams Family Association. the Cemetery is cared for by the Newport Hospital Corporation.
John Sayles was made Freeman 27 January 1651, participated in civic affairs and held many offices at Providence curing the early days of the Colony: Governor's Assistant 1653-1659, Town Commissioner 1655-1659, Providence Town Clerk 1655-1657, and Town Treasurer 1659-1660. He also was surveyor for the bounds of the Colony and for lot boundaries.
On 27 January 1651, John bought a house and lot from John Throckmorton on Towne Street (now North Main Street). On 12 May 1652, he bought land from Ralph Earle near West River. These purchases, in addition to land left to him by his father and given to him by his father-in-law, Roger Williams, undoubtedly made him one of the largest property owners in the vicinity of Prvidence.
