He was a very prominent merchant at Newport and, arguably, the most important family member. he engaged in business in 1663-64 at Barbadoes with his brothers William and Elisha. He returned to Newport where he was made a freeman on 2 May 1666. He continued his business with Barbadoes, shipping wool, horses and other goods to various places and sugar to London. He imported English goods to Rhode Island. He was imprisoned in 1668 in a "Boston goal (jail) for debt", but was released on bond that was paid for by his uncle Edward Hutchinson. Gov. Sanford had large land holdings in Jamestown, R.I. and had a house at Black Point and a town house in Newport. (Note: They had seven children, but their birth order is uncertain and requires further research.)

He immigrated in Nov 1631 to Boston on the ship "Lion", Capt. William Pierce, master. He was NOT the son of Samuel and Eleanor Sanford of Alford, co. Lincoln as purported in other sources. His English origins are unknown to date. he was one of the most important employees in Gov. John Winthrop's family between 1629 and 1631. He was a trained surveyor and was familiar with military matters, especially artillery. His inventory shows that he was the owner of some pieces of the armor of the period. It is possible that he had seen service, prior to coming to New England, in some of the English expeditions to the Continent, or in the Thirty Year's War (in Germany). He m. 1st Elizabeth Webb ca 1631/2, sister of Henry Webb who was a prominent merchant in Boston. Elizabeth died shortly after the birth of her son Samuel on 14 July 1635. they had another son John and a daughter Eliphal. John served on a committee on 6 Aug 1633 to build bridges over the Muddy and Stony Rivers. He was on the list of freeman 16 mar 1640/1 and was chosen May 1653 as the 5th President of the Rhode Island Colony. His will of 22 Jun 1653 was proved 20 Nov 1653.

John married Bridget HUTCHINSON in 1635 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Bridget (daughter of William HUTCHINSON and Anne MARBURY) was born on 15 Jan 1618/9 in Alford, co. Lincoln; died on 29 Sep 1696 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

She immigrated on 18 Sep 1634 to Boston on the ship "Griffin". She was more than once publicly whipped with her stepdaughter Eliphal, and other Quakers, for indulging in certain vagaries of opinion and doctrine not agreeable to the magistrates of Boston. She had a will dated 29 Sep 1696.
