    Notes:

Excerpt from "Certain Comeoverers": Probably soon after his marriage he followed his father in law, John Cooke, to the new settlement in Dartmouth. He seems to have been living in Plymouth on February 28, 1655, and he had removed to Dartmouth before 1660, where he was taxed. He lived in the northerly part of Fairhaven, his farm including what in later days has been known as the Laura Keene farm, and also the Franklyn Howland place.
Arthur Hathaway took something of a leading position in the newly settled town of Dartmouth. In 1662 he acted as one of three arbitrators in a dispute between the heirs of Robert Hicks, who was one of the original proprietors. The first record of the Selectmen of Dartmouth is in 1667 and Arthur Hathaway was then on the Board. His name appears as a Selectman some eight or ten times in subsequent years. In 1667, he, with Sergeant James Shaw, was appointed to exercise the men of Dartmouth in the use of arms. In 1670 Arthur Hathaway is listed as one of the seven freemen of Dartmouth. In 1671, he was appointed by the court at Plymouth as a magistrate to take oaths, etc. In 1684, he took the oath of fidelity. In the same year he is named as one of the proprietors of the grist mill at the place since known as Smith Mills, being associated with Ralph Allen, John Russell, and Samuel Hicks. Thereafter there are no records of his public activities, although he lived until 1711. If, as I deem altogether probable, he is the Arthur Hathaway who in 1643 was able to bear arms in Marshfield, he must have been about ninety years of age or more when he died. In his will, written in February, 1709-1710, he describes himself as "very weak of body, but of perfect mind and memory." His wife, Sarah, who was probably some ten years his junior, was living when the will was drawn. To his daughter, Mary, who had married Samuel Hammond, he left a legacy of five shillings.

Excerpt from "Mayflower Families in Progress - Francis Cooke": The will of Arthur Hathaway of Dartmouth dated 9 Feb. 1709-1710, proved 6 Feb. 1711-1712, mentions sons John, Thomas, Jonathan; daus, Mary Hammond, Lydia Sisson, Hannah Cadman; wife Sarah; son John Executor. The inventory was taken 17 Dec. 1711 and it gives his date of death.

    Name:
Arthur Hathaway was a resident of Marshfield, Mass., in 1643, and in 1646 is found at Plymouth. Nov. 20, 1652, he married at Plymouth, Sarah Cooke, daughter of JohnCooke, of the Mayflower, who was named for her mother Sarah Warren. She was a granddaughter of Richard Warren and of Francis Cooke, also Mayflower passengers. Before 1660 Arthur hathaway had removed to Dartmouth, whither his father-in-law had also migrated from Plymouth. He lived in the northerly part of the present town of Fairhaven, his farm including what in later days was known as the Laura Keen farm, the summer home of the famous actress. He was a considerable owner in the Dartmouth purchase, and took a leading part in the affairs of the township. In 1667 he was a member of the first board of selectmen, and held that office some eight or ten times subsequently. He was also one of those appointed to exercise the men of Dartmouth in the use of arms. In 1671 he was appointed by the Court at Plymouth as a magistrate to take oaths, etc. he died in 1711, being probably in the vicinity of eighty-five years of age, and his wife, who was considerably his junior, survived him.

Arthur married Sarah COOKE on 20 Nov 1652 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Sarah (daughter of John COOKE and Sarah WARREN) was born about 1635 in Plymouth, Massachusetts; died on 26 Feb 1712/13 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
