"Folsom Genealogy": John Folsom, bapt. in Hingham, Mass. 3 oct. 1641; made his will 24 Nov. 1715 and d. bef. 6 Dec. 1715 aged about 75; m. 10 Nov. 1675, ABIGAIL PERKINS (dau. of Abraham) of Hampton, NH b. there 12 Apr 12. 1655.
He is called in the records, Deacon John, to distinguish him from his son, his nephews and his grandsons named John.
On the 28th of Sept. 1668, the town of Exeter "granted to John Folsome, Junior, 20 acres of land about Salisbury old way between James Walls land and Hampton line provided it was not formerly given." That same year he was one of the men chosen to "run the line between Hampton and Exeter upon the line west and by north." On 22 Feb. 1670, "John Folsome,Jr. was added to the men formerly agreed upon to run the line between Hampton and Exeter, according to the Court order, that is to begin at ye bound tree at Asse Brooke and soe to direct upon a direct lyne so as to leave Exeter falls a myle and halfe due north of ye same, and from thence upon a West and by north lyne to the extent of ten miles." Having volunteered in a N.H. contingent of a Massachusetts expedition against the Eastern Indians, was wounded at Cape Elizabeth, September 22,1690, and died a year after in Exeter, aged 40.

He was mortally wounded in a fight with the Indians at Macquoit.

Nathaniel married Elizabeth GILMAN on 12 Jul 1678. Elizabeth (daughter of John GILMAN and Elizabeth TREWORGY) was born on 16 Aug 1661 in Exeter, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire; died about 1732 in Exeter, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire; was buried in 2nd Burying Ground, Exeter, New Hampshire. "Folsom Genealogy": John Folsom and his wife came to this country, with the Gilmans, in 1638 and settled in Hingham, Massachusetts. He was granted four acres of land which abuted upon the "Playbe" eastward, and upon the "Common" westward. With Captain Joshua Hobart he had liberty from the inhabitants of the town to utilze certain streams for the purpose of erecting a saw-mill, or mills.
He was a member of the Hingham militia. In 1645 he was a selectman, one of those chosen to order the affairs of the town. In the same year he was implicated in the Anthony Eames Affair, Eames having been appointed Captain of the military company by the government, was rejected by the townspeople, who elected Bozoan Allen. This result caused John Folsom(Foulsham) with others to be fined twenty pounds, but his fine was later remitted. he was representative from Hingham in 1654....

A descendant of the emigrant Daniel Ladd writes:
"Horace Walpole, when speaking of the times of Charles the 2nd, said, 'that there were no Englishmen then left in England for that all men worthy the name had gone to American; and though this is the language of hyperbole, there was enough of truth in it to give it point; and Lord Brougham said that New England was founded by men of whom Old England was not worthy It has been wisely as well as beautifully said that 'God sifted a whole nation that He might send choice grain over into this wilderness Of this grain was 'that Daniel Ladd from whom we are descended. He came here in the prime of his youth, and for sixty years thereafter labored, trusting God and fearing nothing,---neither labor, nor cold, nor privation, nor savage enemies, so that he might help to build up, on these rough shores, a better England than he had left behind. And wisely his work, and the work of those who were like him, do follow them. "That Daniel Ladd was accounted a man of good social position, when that was a matter of no small consequence, though all were practically nearly on the same level in point of fortune, we have every reason to believe. He held at one time the rank of "Lieutenant,' and his son Nataniel, who came to Exeter, married there the daughter of Hon. John Gilman, one of the Council for the Government of Province, Speaker of the House of Assembly in 1697, and the leading man, both for wealth and influence, in the Province out of Portsmouth, and the founder of a family which, down to this day, has been one of the most distinguished in the Province and State. Other marriages, in this and the next generation, bear witness to the respectability and social consideration of the Ladd family."

Daniel, the emigrant settler, came with wife Ann from Wiltshire, England,; according to one authority in the ship "Mary and John," of London, March 24, 1633-1634, Robert Sayres, master. His name appears next in Ipswich records in 1637, when he was granted 6 acres of land by the town, upon which he built a dwelling house, which 7 years later, in 1644, he sold to Henry Kingsbury of Ipswich, who afterwards removed to Rowley, an adjoining town, and then to Haverhill. In 1639 Daniel had removed to Salisbury, Mass., on the North side of the Merrimac River. At this time Salisbury, which at first was called Colchester, was one of the towns of the ancient county of Norfolk, which also included Hampton and Exeter, all towns on the north side of the Merrimac River. Haverhill at this time (1639) was not organized. Ladd took a party with 50 other men in the affairs of Salisbury, By the record of the birth of 3 of his children, it appears that he was residing in Salisbury in 1644, and by the record of his fourth child; he was in Haverhill in 1646, and here he continued to reside until his death.

The first record we find of Daniel Ladd, after his arrival in New England, was at Ipswich, where "the 5th of February, 1637, there was granted Daniel Ladd six acres of land." On this land he built a dwelling-house, which eleven years later he sold to Henry Kingsbury....

Excerpt from "The Story of the Gilmans and a Gilman Genealog......":He was fourteen when he arrived in Hingham, Mass., and it was ten years later when he located in Exeter, New Hampshire. He and his older brother Edward were in the lumber and milling business, but, after Edward's death at sea the entire management devolved upon John and he became at once a leader in Exeter. He was selectman for many years and received many important grants of land. When New Hampsire was separated from Mass. in 1680 he was Councillor for 3 years. He was also a member of the House of Representatives and in 1693 was elected Speaker. He is referred to as the Honorable John.

John married Elizabeth TREWORGY on 30 Jun 1657. Elizabeth (daughter of James TREWORGYE and Catherine SHAPLEIGH) was born about 1639; died on 08 Sep 1719. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
