Excerpt from Blood Royal: Thomas fought at the Battle of Crecy August 26, 1346. About 1346, during his absence abroad, Joan his wife went through a form of marriage (Possibly under compulsion) with William Montagu, Earl of Salisbury. On November 17, 1349, the Pope ordered that Joan should be restored to her lawful husband.

In 1340 he was in the expedition to Flanders, taking part in the Battle of Sluys on 24 June, and the siege of Tournai in July. He fought at Crecy on 26 Aug 1346, in the Prince's division, and after the battle superintended the counting of the slain. About 1346, during his absence abroad, Joan his wife went through a form of marriage (Possibly under compulsion) with William Montagu, Earl of Salisbury. He was a founder Knight of the Order of the Garter in 1348. On 17 Nov 1349 the Pope ordered Joan to be restored to him. He was summoned to Parliament from 15 Mar 1353/4 by writ directed 'Thome de Holand', whereby he is held to have become Lord Holand. His wife may possibly be the lady in whose honour the Order of the Garter received its name. In 1360 he was summoned as Earl of Kent.

Isabel Le Despener, was born about 1312. She was married in the King's Chapel at Havering-atte-Bower on 9 Feb 1320/1, she being about eight years of age, to Richard Fitz Alan (Copped Hat), 3rd Earl of Arundel and 4th Earl of Surrey, son and heir of Edmund Fitz Alan, 8th Earl of Arundel, Baron of Oswestry, co. Salop, Baron of Clun, co. Salop, by Alice, daughter of William de Warenne. He was born about 1313, and was about seven years of age at time of marriage. In 1330-1 he was fully restored in blood and honours and obtained restitution of the Castle and honour of Arundel, becoming Earl of Arundel. Their marriage was annulled by Papal mandate on 4 Dec 1344 on the ground of his minority and of his never having willingly consented to the match. He took a distinguished part the wars with France, was Admiral of the West 1340-41 and 1345-47, commanded the second division at the Battle of Crecy, and was at the fall of Calais in 1347.

He was summoned to Parliament v.p. on 6 Feb 1298/9 by writ directed 'Henrico de Lancestre nepoti Regis', whereby, he may be held to have become Lord Lancaster. He took part in the siege of Carlaverock in July 1300. He was created Earl of Leicester on 29 Mar 1324, and restored as Earl of Lancaster between 1324 and 1326 succeeding his older brother Thomas. On the Queen's return to England with Roger de Mortimer in September 1326, he joined her party against King Edward II, which led to a general desertion of the King's cause. He was sent in pursuit and captured the King at Neath. He was appointed to take charge of the King, and was responsible for his custody at kenilworth. About 1330 he became blind. Upon the fall of Mortimer his close personal relations with the young King were renewed.
