    Eli Cox

Eli Cox was born in Clinton Co., Ohio, Aug. 28 A. D. 1825, and died in Madison Co., Iowa, March 22 A. D. 1885, aged 59 years 7 months and 24 days. About 30 years of his life was spent in Clinton county, Ohio, and 27 years to Madison county, Iowa.

He was one of the most honored and best citizens of this county and was a man of honest industry. He planned so as to always have plenty to do and whatever he found to do he did with his might. Blest with a strong constitution few men could have endured so much hard labor. By profession he was a carpenter and contracted extensively, building numerous bridges, schoolhouses, barns and houses all over this county and in Warren. Among the buildings he erected are the U. P. and Presbyterian churches in Winterset and the Opera House block, and the office of the MADISONIAN. In matters of religion he was quiet and reserved but he felt deeply and trusted in Christ. He held a birth-right membership in the Friends' Church. When confident that he must die he said he felt prepared and would die happy.

He leaves his bosom companion and 12 children and numerous friends to mourn his loss but we are comforted in the thought that he will be ever happy in the companionship of the redeemed.

After the funeral services on March 24th a procession of 40 teams moved to the McDonald burying ground in Jefferson township and laid his body in the tomb to await the resurrection morn. May God comfort the widow and children and make them an unbroken family in that morn when the King shall come in his beauty.

    E. W. Curtis, of U. B. Church.
