    Notes:

    Name:
Joseph married, first Sarah Danforth, who was born at Cambridge, Massachusetts, on 11 Nov 1646, daughter of Honorable Thomas Danforth, later the president of Maine, and Mary Withington. Sarah died, presumably at Lynn, between 1681 and 1683. No vital records from Cambridge or Lynn were found for Sarah's marriage or death. The marriage and its year "about 1673", were noted by William Whiting without reference. It is unknown where the marriage took place. Proof of the marriage is found in Thomas Danforth's will, dated 1 September 1699 and proved 16 November 1699, in which he bequeathed his estate to his son-in-law Mr. Joseph Whiting, pastor of the church in Southampton on Long Island, and for which is "grandsons" Daniel Champney and Samuel Sparhawk were named executors. Samuel Sparhawk was the husband of Sarah Whiting, Joseph and Whiting and Sarah Danforth's daughter.

Joseph married second, at Stamford, Connecticut, on 28 October 1684, Rebecca Bishop, who was born at Stamford n February 1663 and died at Southampton on 21 April 1726. She was a daughter of Rev. John Bishop and his wife Rebecca Goodyear. rev. Bishop was the second minister at Stamford. Rebecca may have had relatives inSouthampton as several Bishops lived in the area.

Joseph Whiting's parents, Samuel and Elizabeth (Saint John) Whiting, lived in Lynn where Samuel was the minister from 1636 to 1679, which included the years of Joseph's childhood and early adulthood. Joseph Graduated at Harvard in 1661 during the tenure of President Charles Chauncey (1654-1672), and he was counted among the greatest graduates during that time. "We may enumerate the following, who were eminent in their day, and shone as lights in the Christian Community throughout New England: Increase Mather, Shubael Dummer, Gershom Bulkley, Zachariah Symmes, Joseph Eliot, Samuel Shepard, Samuel Willard, Simon Bradstreet, Nathaniel Chauncy, Joseph Whiting, Solomon Stoddard, Moses Fiske, Nehemiah Hobart, Abraham Pierson, Daniel Gooking, Samuel Mather, Peter Thacher." After his graduation Joseph returned to Lynn and assisted his father. He was ordained as his father's successor on 6 October 1680 after his father's death......

Mr. Whiting continued in the ministry at Southampton for forty-three years, until his death in 1723. His weathered grave stone may still be read in the Old South End Burying Grounds in Southampton:

    HERE LIES THE
    REVERENT MR IOS
    EPH WHITING WHO
    DIED APRIL THE 7Yr
    1723 IN Ye 82 YEAR
    OF HIS AGE

The will of Joseph whiting states the names of his wife and living children and establishes the birth order of his sons. ...

After Mr. Whiting's death, his widow Rebecca Whiting sold the "east half and new end of my now dwelling house in the Town Plot of Southampton. And one-half of my Garden joining to my house, with the free privilege of a cartway on ye north side of the house to the barn" for L10 to her son Ebenezer Whiting on 4 December 1724.

This house and lot was reportedly on the east side of Main Street. Rebecca's much sharper and less weathered gravestone is next to her husband's. It reads:

    HERE LYES Ye BODY
    OF Mrs REBECCA WHIEING
    WIFE OF Mr JOSEPH WHIEING
    AGED 63 YEARS
    & 2 MONTHS DEC
    APRIL Ye 21 1726

Rebecca Whiting made her will on 16 April 1726 during an illness that she did not expect to recover nor did she, for she died on 21 April 1726....

According to family legend, one of the sons (Possibly Samuel) was sent to carry dinner to some men at work. He had to go through some woods and lost his way. He ws not found until he had starved to death. He had eaten all the food except the cheese. He disliked cheese so much that he would rather starve to death.
