  1. 2.  Oliver STONE was born on 27 Apr 1761 in New Braintree, Massachusetts (son of Ensign Oliver STONE and Mary FROST); died Poss. before 1798 in Nelson, Madison Co., New York.

    Name:
    Being a posthumous child and also losing his mother when a few years old, he was bound out in boyhood to Solomon Matthews of New Braintree, Mass., and later, on 6 Oct. 1777, he chose Mr. Matthews for his guardian. (Worcester County Probate Record, no. 56836)

    Oliver Stone engaged in at least thee campaigns in the Revolution. From 27 July to 29 Aug. 1777 he was private in Capt. Edmund Hodge's company, Col. Job Cushing's regiment, in the Bennington expedition, serving one month and seven days to the northward, including four days (ninety miles) travel home; from 30 Mar to 2 July 1778 he served in Capt. Thomas Whipple's company, Col. Abijah Searns' regiment, guarding prisoners from General Burgoyne's army; and he also appears in a descriptive list of men raised for six months' service with the Continental Army, as Oliver Stone of New Braintree, aged nineteen years, stature five feet, four inches, complexion light, enlisted 11 July 1780, discharged 11 Jan. 1781, service six months and nine days including 160 miles travel home. This service was in Washington's army on the Hudson River. ("Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution," vol. 15, p.116)

    In the United States Census of 1790, Oliver Stone is listed as head of a family in New Braintree, Mass., of one male over sixteen years, two males under sixteen years and three females. His name does not appear there in the United States Direct Tax of 1798, so before this year he removed to Nelson, Madison County, New York, where he afterwards resided and died.

    Oliver married Mary DOW on 15 Sep 1785. Mary was born on 29 May 1768 in New Braintree, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
