He was Sheriff of Hampshire, Burgess for Chichester, East Looe, Yarmouth and Aylesbury. Thomas West was Knight of the Shire and Sheriff of Hampshire. He and Anne had five sons (including Robert, Knt. who remained in England) and six daughters (including Lucy, Katherine, Eleanor and Anne, who all remained in England). The Wests settled in Sussex during the middle ages, where they acquired considerable property in the county by early 16th century, principally through marriage, including two large houses at Offington and Halnaker. The family interest spread into Hampshire with the acquisition in 1540 of the estates formerly belonging to the monastery of Wherewell. Offington and Wherwell were henceforth their principal residences and no doubt they resided for part of the year in each location.

Thomas West was in the Low Countries with Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester and was knighted by him at Flushing. Ir as probably through the influence of West's father-in-law Knollys, with Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford that West was returned for East Looe in 1571. It was his relation, Sir Georg Carey, captain of the Isle of Wight, who secured the nephew's return for Yarmouth in 1586 and yet another relation provided him with a seat in 1593. Thomas West took part in the trials of both Essex and Southampton. However, his estates were not extensive enough to support the dignity of a peer. He suffered financially from the extended travels and involvement of his son Thomas in Essex rebellion.
