    He was summoned to Parliament 14 Nov 1621. Henry succeeded to the title of 4th Baron Delaware on 7 June 1618. He gained the rank of captain in 1624 in the service of the Earl of Oxford's Regiment of Foot (Note: Sir Henry West was the 5th great-grandfather of the Hon. Lionel Sackville-West, 2nd Baron Sackville (1827-1908), Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States from 1881-1888. Sir Lionel, who succeeded his elder brother Mortimer in the barony of Sackville, submitted the birth and baptismal records of the children of Henry's grandfather, Thomas and Anne (Knolly's West, 2nd Lord De la Warr. These records, known as the "Bennet Roll" by Samuel Bennet, Esq. (ca l653-1735), were published in the May 1883 issue (9:461-464) of the "The Magazine of American History with Notes and Queries".

    Name:
    Thomas, who was the 3rd Lord De la Warr, matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford on 9 Mar 1591/2 and received his A.M. 20 Aug 1605. Sir Thomas was Member of Parliament for Lymington in 1597/8. Thomas West followed Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex to Ireland in 1599, distinguishing himself in action near Arklow and was knighted by Essex at Dublin. he adhered to Essex even during the revolt of 1601 and was imprisoned in the Wood Street counter. Sir Thomas was lucky to be granted the liberty of the prison before the end of February and to be sent to his father's house a month latger on giving a bond of L2,000. Sir Thomas appeared before the Privy Council on 28 Apr 1601, and again in the following month, at which time he was fined 1,000 marks but escaped indictment. he succeeded to his father's title and to estates in Sussex and Hampshire within a year of his release. There was some difficulty about his entering into possession, and in May 1602 Sir Thomas Shirley petitioned Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury that the Queen would grant West "those things which his father enjoyed.. for the young gentleman is left in a most broken estate."

    West described himself as "the poorest baron of this kingdom" in a letter to Cecil, which led him to go to Virginia. he arrived at Jamestown in July 1609, the expedition being just in tine to save the colonists from starvation, and was the first Lord Governor and Captain General of Virginia from 28 Feb 1609/10. It was while on another voyage to Virginia that West died at sea 7 June 1618. Administration of his property was granted on 1 July 1620 to his widow. His eldest son, Henry, aged 14, succeeded. He immigrated in June 1610 to Jamestown on the ship "De la Warr".

    Thomas West, Knt., of Wherwell, co. Hants, 2nd Lord Delaware, Sheriff of Hampshire, M.P. son and heir by first marriage.

    He was Sheriff of Hampshire, Burgess for Chichester, East Looe, Yarmouth and Aylesbury. Thomas West was Knight of the Shire and Sheriff of Hampshire. He and Anne had five sons (including Robert, Knt. who remained in England) and six daughters (including Lucy, Katherine, Eleanor and Anne, who all remained in England). The Wests settled in Sussex during the middle ages, where they acquired considerable property in the county by early 16th century, principally through marriage, including two large houses at Offington and Halnaker. The family interest spread into Hampshire with the acquisition in 1540 of the estates formerly belonging to the monastery of Wherewell. Offington and Wherwell were henceforth their principal residences and no doubt they resided for part of the year in each location.

    Thomas West was in the Low Countries with Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester and was knighted by him at Flushing. Ir as probably through the influence of West's father-in-law Knollys, with Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford that West was returned for East Looe in 1571. It was his relation, Sir Georg Carey, captain of the Isle of Wight, who secured the nephew's return for Yarmouth in 1586 and yet another relation provided him with a seat in 1593. Thomas West took part in the trials of both Essex and Southampton. However, his estates were not extensive enough to support the dignity of a peer. He suffered financially from the extended travels and involvement of his son Thomas in Essex rebellion.

    She was possibly the granddaughter of Henry VIII, as purported in an article by noted genealogist Anthony Hoskins. He offers a compelling case (accepted by many genealogists) that Catherine Carey was the daughter of Henry VIII by Mary Boleyn, his mistress during the birth of her two (Carey) children before he married her sister, Anne Boleyn.

    William West, having been adopted as heir by his uncle, the last Lord, he 'being not content to stay till his uncle's natural death, prepared poison to dispatch him quickly,' and was consequently, by Act of Parliament on 1 Feb 1549/50, disabled from all honours. He was restored in blood on 10 Apr 1563 under the style of "William West, Esquire". He was created Baron Delaware on 5 Feb 1569/70. He was summoned to Parliament from 15 Sep 1586 by writs directed 'Willielmo West de la Warr Chl'r.'
