Robert was born in the Ohio Territory in the area that became Noble County in 1850.
Robert and his wife, Sevilla Gates are buried in Dover Cemetery just a few miles outside of Powhatan Point, Ohio. Sevilla was the daughter of George and Sevilla Stiehl Gates who are buried a few miles away in the Boger Cemetery. Over the years their tombstones had toppled over due to ground settling. In 1997 the original stones were up-righted and repaired. Birth and death dates taken from those tones. There is a conflict in their marriage date. The Belmont County records show that their marriage license was issued in January 3, 1822, however, their Family Bible states that their wedding date was April 18, 1822. The farm that they lived on was given to Sevilla by her father. There appears to be a problem between Robert and his father-in-law. the farm was never titled in Robert's name but passed from Sevilla to her son, Robert.

Robert married Sevilla GATES on 18 Apr 1822 in Belmont County, Ohio. Sevilla (daughter of Georg GOETZ and Maria Sybilla STEHELI) was born on 24 Jun 1801 in Washington County,Pennsylvania; died on 04 Dec 1898 in Belmont Co., Ohio; was buried in Dover Cemetery, near Powhatan Point, Belmont County, Ohio.
