    "Descendants of William Brewster": John Morgan served as Sergeant and Captain of the Groton Train Band from 1714-1730. On Friday, 10 September 1731, Capt. John Morgan was found guilty of breach of Peace against Luke Perkins. The disorder occurred "on Monday last at the proprietors meeting."

    The will of Capt. John Morgan of Groton, dated 30 may 1744, and proved 16 March 1746/7, gave to his only son John Morgan, "all lands that I hold by deed from my Honoured father, and also the lands that I purchased . . by entails, that is to say, to him during life and then to his eldest son, then surviving, and to the eldest male heir of my son's eldest son, and so on in line right down through the eldest male heir, to the end of time, and never to be divided in case such male heir doth not fail." He also mentioned the two children (unnamed) of his daughter Ruth Brewster deceased; his seven daughters, viz: mary, Sarah, Hannah, Rachel, martha, Elizabeth, and Jemima. special note was made of the estate that came by wife Ruth, deceased, by father in law Mr. Benjamin Shapley or Mrs. Mary Shapley. Witnesses: David Williams, Theophilus Morgan, William Williams. the inventory, dated 28 march 1747, was taken by Christopher Avery, Jr., and William Williams. John Morgan (Jr.) was appointed executor on 30 May 1747.

    On 28 march 1747, Martha Gear widow of Groton, daughter of Capt. John Morgan, (signed with a mark); Moses Fish and Elizabeth his wife of Voluntown; John Morgan Jr. and mary his wife of Groton; Robert Kennedy and Sarah his wife of Norwich; Peter Plumb and Hannah his wife of New London; Thomas Fish and Jemima his wife of Groton; and rachel Morgan of Groton signed receipts for their portions of Capt John Morgan's estate. All receipts were witnessed by Christopher Avery, Jr. and William Williams.

    "William Brewster Descendants": Ruth was born in New London, Conn., 21 December 1672, baptized 22 December 1672, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Pickett) Shapley. Ruth died in Groton, Conn., Friday, 19 October 1739. the diary of Joshua Hempstead recorded Saturday, 20 October 1739, "Old Ms. Ruth Morgan of Groton Wife to Capt. Jno Morgan. She was the eldest child of Mr. Shapley the first of ys Town, aged about 66 Died ys Day, about 10 Clock."

    Ruth married probably in new London circa 1696, John Morgan, who was born in New London, 10 June 1667, the son of John and Rachel (Deming/Dymond) Morgan. John died in Groton, March 1746/7, "called Captain, buried Sunday 8 march 1746/7 in his 80th year."

    No marriage record has been found for Ruth Shapley and John Morgan. the marriage is proved by the inventory of the estate of her father, Benjamin Shapley dated 10 September 1706, which contains a list of his children and their ages. Among the names is Ruth Morgan, 33. Daniel Shapley, John Morgan and Ruth his wife, and Mr. James Morgan and his wife Anne were sued the second Tuesday in January 1738/9, by Joshua Appleton in connection with the estate of Benjamin and Mary (Pickett) Shapley, and she is further identified by Hempstead in the record of her death.

    Name:
    William of Noank, the eldest son of William, of Fisher's Island, was a farmer and a large land owner. That part of the property which fell to the share of William, lay mostly in Noank and Noank Neck. It included also parcels of farm and woodland on Fort Hill, especially on the south and east sides, and reaching northerly until it touched the grounds of his father's great farm on the heights.

    William also had large possessions in Bozrah and Lebanon and, in the course of thirteen years, from 1720 to 1733, no less than thirty deeds recorded in the Town Clerk's office show William as a party in the sale of land. He had money in abundance which he spent freely in purchasing more land. William is reported to have moved to Bozrah, Connecticut, about 1744, where he afterward lived and died.



    He was a farmer and large landowner and had large possessions in Bozrah and Lebanon. William had a will dated 30 Nov 1773, with a codicil dated 2 Dec 1773, that was proved 14 June 1774 at Stonington. William's surname is sometimes called Walsworth. William Walworth claimed to be descended from Sir William Walworth, who was Lord mayor of London at the time of the rebellion of Wat Hilliard, in the reign of Richard II. Sir William died in 1383 and was buried in the Church of St. Michael, Crooked Lane, London. His father came to the new London Colony at the instance of Major General John Winthrop commanding the forces of the colony, who afterwards became its governor.

    William's wife, Mary, descended from the leading families of Nobility and Royalty of England. She was a direct descendant of King Edward III of England, and of thirteen former kings, prior to King Edward's reign.

    She also was a member of the illustrious family of the Lords of De la Warr, who were connected with the early settlement of America. Sir Thomas West, 3d Lord De La Warr, and his brother, John, both were among the early Governors of the Virginia Colony. Her great-grandfather, General John Humphrey, a lawyer by profession, was one of the founders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the Colony's first Deputy Governor. He was prominent in the foundation of Cambridge College, familiarly known today as Harvard University.

    Mary's father, Capt. Samuel Avery, was the son of Capt. James Avery and Joanna (Greenslade), and grandson of Christopher Avery, progenitor of the Avery family in New England. He was born Aug. 14, 1664, and on Oct. 25 1686, married Susannah Palmes, dau. of William Palmes and Ann (Humphrey), of Swanzey, Mass. Capt. Samuel Avery operated a large farm and was chosen moderator upon the legal organization of the town of Groton in 1704, and its first townsman at the first town meeting in 1705, an office which he held until his death, which occurred May 1, 1723. Records show that he is buried about a mile northeast of the Seth Williams' farm in Ledyard, Conn. on a farm of CH. Stanton.
