  1. 1.  Newton REED was born on 26 Feb 1805 in Amenia, Dutchess Co., New York (son of Ezra REED and Esther EDGERTON); died on 19 Mar 1896 in Amenia, Dutchess Co., New York; was buried in South Amenia Cemetery, Amenia, Dutchess Co., New York.

    Notes:

    Name:
Newton succeeded to the farm according to his father's wish, and spent his life there, though he at first planned to study for the ministry. He married Ann Van Dyck, and they had eight children, all of whom grew to maturity. He lost one son, Albert B., in the civil war, and there is a brief sketch of Albert's life and character in the regimental history, "The Dutchess County regiment," etc. At the age of twenty Newton was made an Elder in the South Amenia Presbyterian Church, and as Elder and Deacon he honorably served that church for seventy-nine years; a most unusual record of service.

He was much interested in genealogical and antiquarian researches, and it is largely due to his untiring efforts that so many of the family records have been preserved, though others have continued the work, building on the foundation he had laid. Throughout his life he was a frequent contributor to periodical publications, and it is doubtless true that he was the best informed of anyone on subjects pertaining to the early settlement of this valley, and it is he who should have written this sketch. In his later years he wrote and published "Early History of Amenia," and a great part of the early history of the town would have been irrecoverably lost to us except for this little book, which has now become a standard for reference.

In lived in a part of his father's house while Polly kept house for their parents in the other rooms. After the death of his parents Newton moved into the main part, remodeling it somewhat, having, as already stated, purchased the farm of the estate.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Fact: Son of Joseph Edgerton and Elizabeth Haskins

    Notes:

    Name:
Simeon Edgerton was a Captain in the Connecticut troops in the revolution, and was with his command at new London, Connecticut, at the tie of the capture and destruction of that place, and Fort Griswold on the other side of the harbor, by the British. The records of Pawlet show that he purchased land there November 11, 1779, nearly two years before his removal to that place. The price named was 500 pounds, and as that was a large sum of money for those times it indicates that he was a man of means.

In his Vermont home Simeon proved a valuable addition to that pioneer community, and he was, most literally, one of the "Town Fathers," for when he died at the age of 77 he had 95 descendants and when his widow died at the age of nearly 84 their living descendants numbered 209.

He served his town as a member of the legislature and was entrusted with many responsible offices.

EDGERTON, Capt. Simeon, from Norwich, Conn., 1781, son of Capt. Joseph Edgerton, who, with his ship, just before the revolution, was foundered at sea and never heard from. He was literally one of the fathers of the town, his descendants numbering 95 at his death in 1809, aged 77. At the death of his widow, Abiah, in 1821, aged 85, her descendants numbered 209. They brought with them five sons: Jedediah, Jacob, John, Simeon and David, and eight daughters: Betsey, m. Elijah Hyde; Abiah m. Josep Adams; Lydia M. Nathaniel Carver; Hannah m. Joshua Cobb; Sally m. Joel Sheldon; Philena M. Seth Sheldon; Polly m. Calvin Dutton and Esther m. Ezra Reed. Capt. Edgerton was a man of few words, but noted for his energy and uprightness of character. He was at the capture of New London and the massacre of Fort Griswold. He was in the legislature two years and was entrusted with many responsible offices.

Simeon married Abiah HOUGH on 23 Nov 1758 in Bozrah Congregational Church, Norwich, New London County, Connecticut. Abiah (daughter of Capt. John HOUGH and Hannah DENISON) was born on 11 Feb 1737 in Connecticut; died on 17 Oct 1821 in Pawlett, Rutland Co., Vermont. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
