Mr. Cogshall was graduated from the university of Michigan in 1862, received the degree of A.M. in 1867, and from the same Institution he received his B.S. and M.S. He was for a while a teacher and was later engaged in book publishing at Muskegon, Mich. He was secretary of the Lowell Moore Lodge, No. 182, A.F. and A.M. and a member of the Damascus Chapter, R.A.M.,Muskegon Council, master of East Tawas Lodge, F.A. and A.M., and master of Tawas City Lodge, A.F. and A.M. Mrs. Cogshall was several time Recorder in the Mizpah Chapter No. 88, O.E.S.

Name:
Bela COGSHALL, Sr., commenced the practice of his profession in Holly, and while residing their was elected too the State Legislature. Prior too that he had served as Sergeant-at-Arms. In educational affairs he was considerably interested, serving as Director of the schools at Holly, and being President of the School Board for some time. He also filled the position of Justice of the Peace. In the Masonic order he became very prominent, and the transactions of the Grand Chapter of 1882, for Michigan, give a full account of his Masonic history. He was made Knight

Templar at Pontiac March 21, 1854, and held the highest offices in all the lodges of which he was a member. From 1854 until 1856 he was Grand Instructor of the Blue Lodge of Michigan and visited all the lodges, with one exception, in this State, correcting them in their work. He died October 21, 1881. His wife had passed from earth in 1860

Archibald was a Methodist Episcopal preacher and worked as a cooper. He moved from Connecticut in 1811 to a farm in the Town of Glenville, Schenectady County, New York. Archibald was listed on the 1820 census of that town with four males under age 10. He moved, with his wife, two daughters, and one son, to Groveland Township, Oakland Co., Michigan, in 1840, where he joined sons Bela and Henry, who had moved there in 1836 and 1839, respectively. Archibald and Abigail were listed on the 1850 census of Groveland Township with two apparent daughters, Betsy, age 23, and Abigal, age 13, both born in New York. Abigail was listed in the 1860 census in the household of Betsey Bird, age 33, in Groveland Township, and in 1870 she was in the household of Bela Cogshall, a 54 year old lawyer, in Holly Township, Oakland County, Michigan. That Esther Cornell was a daughter of this couple is proved by Esther's death record, which lists her parents as Archibald Cogshall and Abigal Slosson.

Archibald married Abigail SLAWSON on 10 Jan 1810 in New Canaan, Connecticut. Abigail (daughter of Israel SLAUSON and Mary DUFREES) was born on 03 May 1791 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA; died on 31 Jan 1876 in Kent City, Kent County, Michigan. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
