He was a Lawyer; admitted to the bar, Sept. 1831, and was Vermont's State Attorney for Franklin County, 1838-1839. He migrated west to Rock island, Illinois, about 1845. The route was by way of Lake Champlain, Lake George, The Eie Canal, the Great Lakes, the Illinois, Michigan Canal to the Mississippi River, then up the river to Rock Island. This place, in those days, held more of promise, then Chicago.
