Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Ebenezer MEIGS was born on 19 Sep 1675 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut (son of Deacon John MEIGS, Jr. and Sarah WILCOXSON); died in Jan 1727 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut.

Ebenezer married Mercy WEEKS on 07 Oct 1700 in East Guilford, New Haven County,Connecticut. Mercy was born on 24 Apr 1679 in Falmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Mercy WEEKS was born on 24 Apr 1679 in Falmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Fact: Daughter of William Weeks and Mercy Robinson

    Notes:

    Name:
Mercy Weeks, dau. of William Weeks, Jr. (William,1) and Mercy Robinson, b. of record Apr. 24, 1679 at Falmouth, Mass. Mercy's mother was the youngest surviving dau. of Isaac Robinson by his 1st wife Margaret Hanford, and paternal granddau. of Rev. John Robinson, pastor of the 1620 Mayflower Pilgrims, and his wife Bridget White, both late of Leiden, Holland.

On Oct. 7, 1700 Mercy m. Ebenezer Meigs, third son of Dea. John Meigs, Jr. and Sarah Wilcoxson, b. of record Sept. 19, 1675 at Guilford. Their marriage is recorded only at Guilford (TR 1:3) and reads:

? Ebenezer Meigs of guilford [and] Mercy Weeks of falmouth m. 7 Oct. 1700, By Mr ShearJashup Bourn Justis of Peac.

Shearjashub Bourn resided at Sandwich, Mass. and was a Justice of the Peace for western Barnstable County, Mass. At the time of the marriage Mercy's father was still living at Falmouth and it is likely the marriage took place at Falmouth. Ebenezer Meigs died at sea before May 30, 1712, the date of his father's will, which includes the following provisions:

? Item. I give to my three grandchildren Ebenezer, Ruben and Joseph Meigs [various parcels of land and marsh]... I give to my two granddaughters Thankful and Mercy Meigs for equal share to them...
? Item. I give to my daughter in-law Mercy Meigs for her use and improvement only all the above marsh and land before given to Ebenezer, Ruben, Joseph and Thankful Meigs during her remaining a widow or until they shall become of lawful age.

The above five named children of Ebenezer and Mercy (Weeks) Meigs later removed to greater Falmouth, Mass., but whether they did so because their mother relocated back near her ancestral family has not been uncovered. If she remarried neither the name of her 2nd husband nor the date and place of her death has been uncovered.

In "The Bumpus Family of New England" (TAG 43[1967]:74), the author claims that Jacob Bumpus, Jr. of Rochester, Mass. "m. (1) 18 April 1705 Mary Weeks at Rochester, dau. of William and Mary; b. Falmouth 24 Apr. 1679, d. 9 Feb. 1708/9." The stated date of the birth of Mary (Weeks) Bumpus is the same date that Mercy (Weeks) Meigs was born. Unfortunately, Mary Weeks, Mercy (Weeks) Meigs eldest sibling, was b. of record Jan. 16, 1669/70 and married Aaron Rowley of record at Falmouth, Mass. on Mar. 7, 1690/1.

In addition, as verified by the Rochester vital records, the marriage of Jacob Bumpus was to "Marey" Weeks with "Marey" Bumpas dying at Rochester on the date cited (Feb. 9, 1708/9.) Unfortunately, some writers have copied the erroneous Bumpas Family Genealogy and attributed the widow Mercy (Weeks) Meigs as being Mercy (Weeks)(Meigs) Bumpus. This despite in Mercy's father-in-law John Meigs' will, the widow Mercy Meigs was still living on Mary 30, 1712, while her last recorded child, son Joseph, was b. 10 months after "Marey" (Weeks) Bumpus d. of record at Rochester. The true identity of Marey (Weeks) Bumpas has not been uncovered by the present writer.

The children of Ebenezer Meigs and Mercy Weeks are summarized in their father's memorial.
