    Funeral arrangements are pending at Southern Funeral Home for Lance Corporal Vernon M. Wallace, 21, who was killed on August 26 while engaging the enemy in combat at Quang Tri Province in the Republic of South Vietnam. Corporal Wallace entered the service as a United States Marine, June 17, 1967. He received his basic training at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and went to Vietnam last January.

    The young marine was born in Winnfield, November 17, 1945 [sic 1946], the son of Mrs. J. B. Wallace and the late Mr. Wallace. His family received word of his death Friday. The message stated he met instant death from fragmentation wounds to the body from enemy mortar fire. He graduated from Winnfield High School in 1965 and operated the Airport Service Station before entering the service.

    Besides his mother, Mrs. J. B. Wallace, he is survived by two brothers, Phillip Wallace of Winnfield and Teddy J. Wallace, Pennsgrove, New Jersey; three stepsisters, Mrs. Lillie E. Carter and Mrs. Judy Godek, both of Pennsgrove, New Jersey; and Mrs. Geneva Kusner of Port Arthur, Texas; a number of uncles and aunts.

    The remains of Corporal Wallace are expected in Winnfield this weekend and arrangements are pending at Southern Funeral Home. Military rites will be conducted and Rev. C. C. Martin will officiate. Interment will be in Gorhamtown Cemetery.

    Funeral services for Joseph B. Wallace, 71, were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Winnfield by Dr. W. L. Holcomb. Burial was in Gorham Cemetery at Joyce.

    Wallace, a retired jeweler, died at 9 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, 1966 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Farmerville and a member of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield.

    Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Clara White Wallace of Winnfield; three sons, Phillip and Ted Wallace, both of Penns Grove, N.J., and Vernon Wallace of Winnfield; three daughters, Mrs. Lillie W. Carter and Mrs. Julia Ann Godek, both of Penns Grove, and Mrs. Geneva Kusnir of Port Arthur, Texas; and seven grandchildren.

    Three brothers, Sidney B. Wallace, Mose Wallace, and Melvin Wallace, all of Ruston, two sisters, Miss Pinky Wallace, Farmerville, and Mrs. Bessie Hargrove of Shreveport also survive.

    Pallbearers were Jimmy Shumake, Travis Holston, Joe Holston, Sonny White, Melvin James, and Huey White.

    WINNFIELD -- Services for Clara E. Wallace will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Southern with the Rev. Roy Moore officiating. Burial will be in Gorham Town Cemetery, Joyce.

    Mrs. Wallace, 87, of Winnfield died Sunday, Nov. 9, 1997, in Winn Parish Medical Center.

    She was a homemaker and a member of Laurel Heights Baptist Church.

    Survivors include two sons, Ted Wallace of Penn Grove, N.J., and Philip G. Wallace of Winnfield; one daughter, Geneva Kusnir of Orange, Texas; two brothers, Huey P. White of Goldonna and Sonny White of Winnfield; one sister, Corine Edwards of Winnfield; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

    Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. until time of services Wednesday in the funeral home.
