    Name:
Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, he served as a Private in Company K, 8th Missouri Volunteer Infantry, enlisting in Warsaw County, Illinois. He would go on to be awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 22, 1863. His citation simply reads "Gallantry in the charge of the "volunteer storming party." On the day in question 150 men were called to volunteer to make a "forlorn hope" diversionary charge on the Confederate position known as the Stockade Redan ? a charge that was intended to draw fire away from the real planned attack, and a charge no one was expected to return from (to this end, only unmarried men were accepted as volunteers). After charging an open plain in full view of the Confederates, the withering fire was such that most of the volunteers were cut down, and those that made it through the fire sought shelter in a ravine under the Redan. There they stayed and fought until nightfall, when the survivors made their way to return to the Union lines, Private Johnson being one of them (85 percent of the men who made the charge did not make it back). He was awarded his Medal on August 16, 1884, twenty one years after he played his part at Vicksburg.

    Name:
    MRS ELIZABETH ANN McWILLIAMS

Many old time friends and neighbors gathered Monday afternoon at Pierce Chapel while funeral services were conducted for Mrs. Elizabeth Ann McWilliams, who passed away on the 8th day of April. Mrs. McWilliams had attained the age of 96 years, 2 months, and 14 days, and was truly a wonderful lady in many ways.

Although she had reached an age far beyond the attained by the larger portion of humanity, she was active up to the beginning of her last illness, about three weeks ago. Possessed of a bright and well informed mind, she was well read on the topics of the day until the weakening of eye sight a few years ago. At that time too she was forced to give up sewing of which pastime she was very fond. She was an expert needlewoman and her work was a source of much pride to her family.

Elizabeth Ann Bothel was born on the 25th day of January, 1827 at Chestnut Flats, Pennsylvania, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D.H. Johnston of Central City on the 8th day of April 1923.

On the 20th day of July 1847, she was united in marriage to Robert McWilliams. to this union two children were born, Mrs. Johnston of this community, and Mrs. M.D. Farren of Colorado Springs. Mrs. McWilliams had been a widow for seventy years and more, the young husband having passed away in 1852 leaving her to bring up her little girls alone.

A devout Christian, Mrs. McWilliams found much consolation in religion. In early womanhood she had united with the Presbyterian church at Curry run, Pa., and held fast throughout all her years to the religious teachings of her youth.

Since 1878 she had made her home with Mrs. Johnston and family. She was well known and greatly beloved throughout the community.

the services were held at 3:00 o'clock, and were conducted by Rev. H.G. Langley, pastor of the Central City Methodist church. burial was made in the Pierce Chapel cemetery.
