    Name:
    Migrated to Watertown, Massachusetts in 1630, age 20, with his widowed father, siblings Rosamond, 18, Samuel 16, Robert, 13, Henry 11, and Grace 8. His father and most of his siblings (Richard and Samuel remained) returned to England in April 1631. Richard, himself, embarked for England from Nantasket on the Lyon on 23 November 1631, remaining about four and a half years. In the summer of 1635, now 25 (although listed as age 23 in the passenger lis), with his wife "Merriall', age 22, and daughter 'Merriall' aged '9 months,' he embarked at London on the 'Susan and Ellen' and settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts. Richard traveled back and forth between England and New England multiple times over the next decades, the final return in 1688.

    Maj. Richard Saltonstall, born at Woodsome 1610, matriculated as 'Mr. Fellow Commoner' in Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, 14 Dec 1627; emigrated with father in 1630, before taking a degree, admitted freeman 18 May 1631, resided Watertown, embarked for England 23 Nov 1631 and remained there four years, in April 1635 embarked at London in the 'Susan and Ellen', with wife Muriel, and daughter Muriel, settled Watertown, Massachusetts, 1630, returned to England 1631, returned with wife Muriel and young daughter to settle at Ipswich, Massachusetts, Deputy of Ipswich to the General Court 1635-7, Assistant from 1637 to 1649, in 1664 and from 1680 to 1683, visited England several times, visited Holland with son Henry in 1644, when Richard's portrait was painted, it is said, by Rembrandt, in 1672 in England (when his three daughters were living married there), and the last time in England in 1683, died at Hulme, co. Lancaster, the seat of his son-in-law Sir Edward Moseley, on 29 Apr 1694.

    Richard married Muriel GURDON on 4 Jul 1633 in Allhallows, Honey Lane, London. Muriel (daughter of Brampton GURDON, Esq. and Muriel SEDLEY) was born in 1613 in England; died on 21/22 April 1688 in Hulme, Lancashire, England; was buried on 25 Apr 1688 in St. James' Church, Didsbury, Lancashire, England.     Richard Saltonstall, Knt., of Huntwick, co. York, is the son of Mr. Samuel Saltonsall, of Kingston-upon-Hull, co. York, by his first wife, Anne, daughter of John Ramsden, Esq., of Longley near Hothersfield. He was baptized at halifax on 4 Apr 1586. After the death of his first wife he sold his lands and removed with his children to New England. Richard was First Associate, Massachusetts Bay Company, and was appointed First Assistant. He commenced the settlement of Watertown in 1630, and was an original patentee of Connecticut with Lord Saye and Sele, Lord Brooke, and others. He returned to England in 1631.

    He was a nephew of the Lord Mayor London Richard Saltonstall (1517-1600) and was admitted pensioner at Clare College, Cambridge in 1603. Richard served as a Justice of the Peace for the West Riding of Yorkshire and was Lord of the Manor of Ledsham before he left England for North America. he sailed aboard the Arbella on 26 Aug 1629 with his wife, Elizabeth, and his children, Richard, Jr., Samuel, Robert, Henry, Grace, Rosamund (children of Grace), John and Ann (children of Elizabeth). he was named First Assistant to Governor John Winthrop. He immigrated in 1630 to Boston (returned 1631 to England).
