At the time of Apphia's marriage to Benjamin, she was a widow with one child, her husband, Capt. Samuel Cardell, having been lost at sea on Jan. 13, 1781.

A bit of romance was attached to the lives of Benjamin and Apphia, prior to her first marriage. She was engaged to Benjamin, but his mother, who was a proud and aristocratic woman, opposed the union. Apphia, learning of her objection, decided it would be unwise for her to become allied with the Walworth family, so she broke her engagement to Benjamin, and later married Capt. Cardell. This marriage was of short duration, as the Captain was lost at sea. This tragedy opened the way for Benjamin to renew his courtship, so the following year he and Apphia were united in marriage and had a large family.

Apphia married Samuel CARDELL on 9 Feb 1780. Samuel was born on 27 Aug 1748 in New London, New London, Connecticut, USA; died on 13 Jan 1781 in Lost at Sea. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Apphia married Benjamin WALWORTH on 29 May 1782. Benjamin (son of Capt. John WALWORTH and Sarah B. DUNN) was born on 11 Nov 1746 in Groton, New London Co., Connecticut; died on 26 Feb 1812 in Hoosick, New York. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

"Hyde Genealogy": The Rev. Jedediah Hyde was a clergyman, ordained 20 Oct. 1746. He belonged to that part of the Congregational church then called "Seperatists": and gathered a church at Bean Hill in Norwich.

Jedediah married Jerusha TRACY on 17 May 1742. Jerusha (daughter of Joseph TRACY and Mary ABEL) was born on 23 May 1723 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, USA; died on 20 Aug 1764 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
