BUCKHORN AREA PIONEER, MRS. PADELFORD DIES
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Piru United Methodist Church for Mrs. Sadie Rhoda Padelford, who died Thursday, Oct 17 in the Acacia Nursing Home at Ojai. The Rev. Shuey Fujishiro officiated with the Rev. Fred Edwards, Jr., of Ojai, former pastor of the Piru church. Interment was in Bardsdale cemetery at the side of her late husband, Frank H. Padelford, who preceded her in death in November, 1963.
Like her husband, Mrs. Padelford was born in Vermont on Feb 6, 1884. She attended normal school in her home state to prepare for a teaching career, then came to California with her sister to visit a great aunt at San Jose. it was then she decided to remain in this state. her parents followed later and lived in South Pasadena. Because California teacher requirements differed fro those in Vermont, Mrs. Padelford enrolled at a preparatory school at Los Angeles.
She met her husband, then clerk of the board, when she applied for a teaching post at the Buckhorn School, and was accepted after taking an examination at Ventura. She taught there in 1908 and 1909 and then went to Pasadena as a substitute.
On Sept. 7, 1910 she became Frank H. Padelford's bride and went to live on the ranch he had homesteaded for 70 years. they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary on Sept. 7, 1960.
Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Padelford went to Grey Gables at Ojai to make her home. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, and the Methodist Church.
She leaves two sons, Frederick Padelford of Buckhorn, and Sumner Padelford of Fillmore; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Cooper and Mrs. Walter Parker of Tipton; three grandsons and three granddaughters, and nine great grandchildren. A daughter, Allene W. preceded her in death.
Family friends serving as pallbearers were Rodney Peyton, Stephen Warring, Jack Warring, Thurman Tate, Eliza Smith and Donald Vedder.
