      Information gathered from the biography section of the 1912 Charles City High School Yearbook.

      Charles D Ellis was the son of Charles P. and Sarah A. Ellis. He was born April 28, 1850 on a farm near Rome, Oneida County, New York. In 1867 the family moved to Charles City, Iowa.

      Charles attended the University of Wisconsin. After one year at the university, the two brothers went to Adrian, Michigan, where they conducted a grocery business for three years after which time Charles started work in a law office there while his brother returned to Charles City.

      In a short time he returned to Charles City and after reading law with Starr & Patterson for several years was admitted to the bar in 1873 and then opened an office of his own. In 1878 he partnered with his brother to form Ellis & Ellis law firm.
