He stayed on the farm until age 23 when he went to work in the leaf tobacco business in Edgerton. In 1882 he moved to Janesville where he was manager of the Wisconsin Telephone Company for two years. He then returned to Edgerton and went back to the buying and selling of leaf tobacco until June 1888, when he moved to Wausau.

In 1893 he went into business for himself and established the Knickerbocker Cigar Store and Billiard Parlor, located at 903 Fifth Street in Wausau. Mr. Bardeen's leader in the ten-cent cigar line was the celebrated "Knickerbocker," which for six years was the best seller in the state of Wisconsin. His leading 5-cent cigar was the very popular "The Wisconsin Valley Cigar."

He was a member of F. & A.M., R.A.M., the Modern Woodmen of America, Equitable Fraternal Union and the Knights of Pythias lodge. He was secretary of Forest Lodge Number 130 for 17 years and for several years was recorder of the St. Omer Commandery. He was the younger brother of noted Wausau resident, Charles Bardeen, former chief justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
