Name |
Joel WHITE [1] |
- He settled in Bolton, Conn., as early as 1725, on lands which were soon after bequeathed to him by his father. He probably first lived on the west side of the street, nearly opposite the burying-ground. InFebruary, 1747, he bought of Francis Smith the place on the south-east corner of the main street and the road to Andover, "fronting near the meeting-house." This was his home for more than forty years, and the large elms now standing there are said to have been planted by his own hands. He was a merchant, engaged in an extensive business, and was a large landholder. The records of bolton show that he bought lands there more than eighty times, and his name appears frequently upon the records of several other towns. At the time of his death he owned over 500 acres of land, although he had a few years previously given a farm to each of his four surviving sons.
He was a justice of the peace, and took a prominent part in the affairs of the town. In 1728 he was chosen town treasurer; he was frequently constable and collector, and was eight times chosen one of the selectmen, between the years 1738 and 1766. [1]
