HALCOTT CENTER _ Donald W. Bouton passed away in his home surrounded by his family on Friday, Aug. 5, 2011.
Donald was born on May 21, 1920 in Halcott Center. He attended Halcott District No. 2 (a one-room schoolhouse) through the eighth grade and graduated from Fleischmanns High School in 1938.
Donald attended Delhi Agricultural College, but left after one year due to his contracting pleurisy. After a lengthy recovery, he did not return to college and stayed to work on the Bouton family farm.
On May 17, 1940, Donald met Shirley Mae Woolheater when she came to Halcott Center to work in the boarding houses. They married on May 17, 1945 and Shirley came to live on the Bouton farm.
In 1966, Donald and Shirley left the farm to start their own dairy business just down the road. They remained dairy farmers of registered Holsteins for 14 years and kept beef cattle for 12 years after that.
In 1980, when Donald was 60 years old, he began working at Belleayre Ski Center. Known as 'Bones Bouton,' he was loved and respected by coworkers and skiers alike. Donald retired from Belleayre in 1995.
Donald served as Deputy Town Clerk, Town Clerk, and Dog Warden for the Town of Halcott. He was a member of the Greene Valley Grange, and faithfully attended services at the Halcott United Methodist Church for over 80 years.
Donald was a gifted writer, poet, and storyteller. At the age of 12, his poem, 'A Farm Boy's Treasure,' was published in the American Agriculturalist. [1]
