Evelyn Irene MARTIN [1] |
- Evelyn Irene Jones, daughter of Jim and Annie Dora Wyss Martin, was born July 12, 1913, near Hayden, Missouri. She departed this life Tuesday, December 28, 2010, in the Neighborhood Senior Center, near Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of ninety-seven years, five months, and sixteen days.
On October 28, 1933, she was united in marriage to Othel V. Jones, and to this union one son was born.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Othel, on December 28, 2003; a son, Harold G. Jones; a brother, James Martin; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Wiles.
Evelyn is survived by a daughter-in-law, Mary Jones, of Lebanon, Missouri; three grandchildren, Terri Brown, and her husband, Troy, Steve Jones, and his wife, Vicki, and Mike Jones, and his wife, LaNnette, all of Lebanon, Missouri; seven great-grandchildren, Tricia and Nicki, Tyler and Jennifer, Jessica, Colt and Alissa, Cale and Amanda, Kylie, and Jaclyn; four great-great-grandchildren, Lake, Bella, Lola, and Kostas; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
She was born and raised in a log cabin in Maries County, near Hayden, Missouri, and attended Kenner School. In 1920, the Martin family moved to Defiance, Iowa, where Evelyn's father worked as a sharecropper for a large corn farmer. During corn picking time, everyone worked picking corn, and Evelyn and her sister, Lizzie, took turns staying in the house and fixing lunch. In 1929, the family moved back to Missouri and Evelyn graduated from Dixon High School in the Class of 1931. She then attended summer school at the University of Missouri at Rolla and started teaching at Lambeth School. After she and Othel were married, they made their home in the Dixon area and Evelyn continued to teach for several years. In 1948, Evelyn and Othel moved to Lebanon and made their home. In addition to being a devoted homemaker and loving mother, Evelyn also worked at a local dime store for several years. She eventually took a position at the Sears Store and continued there until retiring.
Evelyn professed her faith in Christ at an early age and was a longtime member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Lebanon.
She was a forty year member of the Daffodil Garden Club and enjoyed growing beautiful flowers. She also liked watching and feeding birds, and greatly enjoyed her loving pet poodle, "Mitzi". Her family was very important to her and she especially enjoyed all of her grandchildren.
Evelyn was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and know that her family and friends will cherish the wonderful memories she created for them throughout the years.
