  	At the time of Apphia's marriage to Benjamin, she was a widow with one child, her husband, Capt. Samuel Cardell, having been lost at sea on Jan. 13, 1781. A bit of romance was attached to the lives of Benjamin and Apphia, prior to her first marriage. She was engaged to Benjamin, but his mother, who was a proud and aristocratic woman, opposed the union. Apphia, learning of her objection, decided it would be unwise for her to become allied with the Walworth family, so she broke her engagement to Benjamin, and later married Capt. Cardell. This marriage was of short duration, as the Captain was lost at sea. This tragedy opened the way for Benjamin to renew his courtship, so the following year he and Apphia were united in marriage and had a large family. [1]
