"MARRYING JUSTICE" WED 50 YEARS
The former "marrying justice," E.G. Morrison, who established a record for marrying 1,250 couples during six years in office here, and Mrs. Morrison celebrated their golden wedding with friends and relatives January 25 at the home of a niece, Mrs. I.H. Caylor, 217 North Connor avenue.
Morrison won the title of "marrying justice" after he was elected justice of the peace to finish the unexpired term of the late Justice Earl. He entered office in November, 1912, and served six years.
Born September 18, 1854, in Manlius, New York, Morrison went to Topeka, Kan., when he was a young man to work in the car department of the Santa Fe railroad. Mrs. Morrison, who is 69 years old, was born April 13, 1862, at Perrysburg New York and moved with her family to Topeka. They were married at Topeka, January 25, 1882, and lived there ten years. They came to Joplin in 1905, and Morrison entered the real estate business. He has been retired from active business for several years.
The golden wedding party was given in honor of the Morrisons by Mrs. C.J. Mitts and Mrs. I.H. Caylor, nieces. Four generations were present, including the nieces, four grandnieces and four great-grandnieces. Among those at the party were a brother of Mrs. Morrison, E.F. Slawson, and Mrs. Slawson of Greenfield, Mo; Mr. and Mrs. Mitts and sons, James and Frank; Miss Lizzie Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Muennig and children, Meda Ruth, Becky Ann and Phillip Jr., Mrs. and Mrs. I.H. Caylor and daughters, Margaret, Isabel and Menryetta; James King of Monett, Miss Grace Caylor and Mrs. Ida Mitts.
