  Notes	Excerpt from "Pitkin Genealogy": Capt. Roger Pitkin, eldest child of William and Hannah Pitkin, was a farmer. He built and settled near his father on the first Main street, on a portion of his father's large tract of land. He was early recognized as one of the leading citizens. He was one of the selectmen of the town for several years and its first school committeeman, 1720. He was commissioner on the "Great Meadows." He was appointed by the Genera Assembly, captain of the first militia company on the east side of the river, then (1698) Third Company State Militia (Col. Rec., p. 271, 392.) He was actively engaged with his command in defense of the town against the Indians in 1704, and in other troubled times. He "owned his covenant" with the "First Church of Hartford" Nov. 22, 1685, and his oldest child, Hannah, was baptized that day. Roger and his wife and his brother William and his wife were received into "full communion" Aug. 14, 1692, in the "First Church of Christ in Hartford."
