- He and his elder brother Abijah, Jr., who had come the year before, purchased 720 acres of the finest farming lan in the town of Champlain, N.Y., besides their property in Chazy, where they also owned all of the water power rights. Lemuel took up his residence on the Chazy portion of their lands, and was one of the early settlers there. During the War of 1812 he was captain of a company of cavalry. Both he and his brother were Jeffersonian Democrats. [1]
