Name |
Sarah HOYT [2, 3] |
- Excerpt from e-mail from Donna McCool dtd 06-24-2012: Sarah Hoyt was born may 6, 1686 the dau. of Deacon David Hoyt and his second wife Sarah Wilson. David was from Hatfield, MA and removed to Deerfield, MA at the time of its firdt permanent settlement. Sheldon (George Sheldon: A History of Deerfield, Massachusetts) says that it is hard to determine specifically when the first settlement occurred as it occurred over a period of time, but does note that David Hoyt was granted a home site in 1682. Based on that fact Sarah would have been born in Deerfield. She was 17 years old at the time of the 1704 raid on Deerfield, when she was taken captive and taken to the village of Lorette, located near Quebec, Canada. [1]

Notes |
- 'A Genealogical History of the Hoyt Families": She was taken captive, with others of her family. Her captors were about to resort to force to compel her to marry a Frenchman, when she offered to marry any one of her captive neighbors who would accept her hand, and thus rid her from her troublesome friends. Mr. Nims accepted the offer, and they were united forthwith. Both were afterwards released from captivity, and returned to their native town where they reared a large family.
