Notes |
- Excerpt from Blood Royal: Charles IV, King of France, died in 1328, leaving no sons or brothers to succeed him. He had one sister, Isabella of France, mother of Edward III. Because Frances's Salic law did not allow a woman to succeed to the throne, Philip VI, Charles' cousin, succeeded. However, England did not recognize the Salic law, and Edward III claimed the throne of France through his mother, thus beginning the Hundred Years' War.
