- He assisted King Edward III in the seizure of the Earl of March in 1330, and from that time was one of the King's most active councillors. He was created EARL OF NORTHAMPTON on 16 Mar 1336/7. On 24 June 1340 he took a leading part in the King's victory at Sluys, and was with him at the siege of Tournay. He fought at Crecy on 26 Aug 1346, and participated in the siege of Calais. In later years he frequently had licenses to export wool, both as a means of recouping his expenses and on the King's behalf. [1]
