  • Name Job COLE  [2, 3
    • The Coles were among the early settlers of the Old Colony. John, Job and Daniel were brothers, and came over from England quite early. john settled at Plymouth, and died testate about the year 1637. Job and Daniel finally settled in Eastham, where they died.

Job Cole married Rebecca, daughter of Mr. William Collier, a resident of that part of the Old Colony now Duxbury, May 14, 1634. He lived for awhile near Mr. Collier. In 1638, Mr. Cole had 40 acres of land granted him at Green harbor, now Marshfield. He was propounded at Plymouth court march 4, 1638/9, and admitted a freeman march 3, 1639/40. It is recorded in 1639 that he paid the passage to this country of Thomas Gray, and found him apparel afterwards and before he became the indentured apprentice of Mr. john Atwood of Plymouth. Mr. Cole's name appears in the list of those who were able to bear arms in Yarmouth in 1643, which indicates that at that date he was a resident of yarmouth; but if he were a resident it seems quite certain that he was not long at that place.

In 1648, he was residing in Eastham, and was that year chosen constable, and was ordered by the Old Colony court to take the oath at home. In 1650, he conveyed land at marshfield to Thomas Chillingsworth, a shoemaker. In 1654, he was again constable of Eastham. In 1657, August 13, he sold his house and land at Duxbury to Christopher Wadsworth for L17 sterling. After this date but little appears concerning him, and it is supposed that he died not far from this period.

Job Cole appears to have been a man of good standing in Eastham, though not much honored in public positions. His brother Daniel was the more noted man and of greater influence in the town and colony. [1]

    Notes
    • Excerpt from "Mayflower Planters, Cape Code Series Vol. II, Merchant Adventurers of England, 1500-1605": the origin of the surname Cole may be a contraction of "Agricola," a tiller of the soil, as Cola occurs in the Domesday Survey. Like many early setlers of New England, the Cole family had a strong "dissenting" background. For instance, Thomas Cole, a divine who died in 1571, and his brother William, who had to leave England when Mary came to the throne in 1553. He was one of a large group of scholars, like John Rogers, Edwin Sandys and others to seek refuge in Germany and Switzerland. Cole, however, was more fortunate than Rogers, and remained in Zurich until Elizabeth ascended the throne, when most of the exiled divines returned to England.
Three brothers, Job, John and Daniel Cole, came to Plymouth with William Collier, a merchant of London in 1633. Probably James Cole of Plymouth was also a brother. In 1634 Job married Rebecca Collier, daughter of William Collier, and removed to Duxbury, but in 1643 settled in eastham, where he was chosen a deputy several times for the town.
