Notes |
- "The Cleveland Genealogy" - Deacon William Cleveland resided first at Norwich, where he learned the trade of silversmith, watch and clockmaker. His farm was on Bean Hill. His jewelry shop, the first house south of the Methodist E. Church, is still remaining, now A.A. Adams' tavern. Here he manufactured spoons; on the back of the handle of which the name CLEVELAND was embossed in bold, handsome letters. Specimens still exist; one of these spoons was presented to his great grand-daughter Ruth, a daughter of President Grover Cleveland; an account of the presentation appeared in '"The Sun, N.Y., Feb 6, 1893" - Soon after marriage he set up in business at Worthington, Massachusetts. He removed to Salem where he remained in business a few years thence went to New York. However, he lived most of his life at Bean Hill, an outskirt of Norwich.
He died while visiting Hon. Lewis F. Allen, his son-in-law and cousin as well.
