- He removed to Surry County soon after his marriage to Mary Herbert, where he built his Windsor Plantation (later in Sussex County). Colonel Claiborne was a burgess (1748, 1749 & 1752), but resigned in 1754 to become clerk of Sussex County. Augustine, who was a Virginia State senator in 1780, was a colonel of the Sussex County militia in 1754 and commander and chief in 1767. He was a member of the Committee of Safety during the American Revolution. Col. Claiborne left a will dated 1 May 1787 that was recorded 17 May 1787 in Sussex County. [1]
