    • He was the first regular surveyor with a compass that resided in any town upon the Connecticut River, having bought a compass a few years before 1700, and that year was appointed Surveyor for Hartford County, being the first man to fill that office under an act of the Court of that date. He served as Clerk of the Hartford County Court and Court of Probate; and as Secretary of the Colony of Connecticut from May, 1709, until his death in 1711-12. His estate amounted to L1747.18.0 at the distribution in 1726-7. He lived in Hartford and was one of the most distinguished men in the colony. [1]
