7801 Mark received his nickname as a result of having been drawn for a jury to try the so-called witches. Not believing in the more or less popular schism of the day, he decided not to have anything to do with the proceedings, and the night before the trial he packed up and rode away. Family traditions tell us that he travelled as far as possible without a stop, comping on the shores of Lake Assawampsett in Lakeville. He went to his brother John in Middleboro, and on his advice settled in Rochester founding the Rochester clan of Haskells. However, since his family did not follow until 1697/8 they endured five years of separation. No doubt his ideas reflected the beinging up he received from his father. We admire hi e as a freethinker. HASKELL, Mark (I27727)

TUTTLE, Marlene Marie (I25)

7804 Marlin went to Marietta shortly after his marriage, where his brother David was already living. He was in Bedford town, Westchester Co., in 1850, a milkman, but went later that year to New York City, taking with him his 3 youngest children and his nephew James H. Montross, son of his brother David of Marietta. On 9 Aug. 1851 he leased for 5 years a 4-story brick building at 422 Fourth Ave., to be used as a dwelling and a milk and butter depot, the rent being $500 a year. Apparently the milk business did not prosper to his satisfaction; he assigned the lease 18 Feb. 1853 (Deeds, New York Co. 624:618) and soon after opened a grocery store at 174 E. 33rd St. in a $2,000 brick building. there we find him in the 1855 New York State census.
But the grocery business did not turn out well either. In June 1856 his brother Lockwood in Chenango, NY, lost his wife, and Marlin with his 20 year old daughter Mary went to keep house for him. Elizabeth may have gone to her sister Maria's home in Marietta. Lockwood married again in 1857, and Marlin moved to Binghamton. There on 29 July of that year he purchased a small lumber mill on the Susquehanna River , known as the Conklin mill property, mortgaging it for $1,800. He subsequently added another mortgage, which was foreclosed in 1869 (Mortgages, Broome Co. 26:118; 63:278). then he turned to carpentry. In 1860 his property consisted of $1,800 in real estate and $300 in personal property. In 1870 his estate had shrunk to $250 of personal property. After the death of Elizabeth, he lived with his son Cicero, then a carpenter residing on Court St., Binghamton.

7827 Marriage intentions were filed at Dartmouth, 3 March 1764 between Seth and Sarah Delano, daughter of Jethro Delano and his wife Elizabeth Pope, born at Dartmouth, 14 October 1741. There is no proof that the marriage took place (Delano en. 461, says she did not marry Seth and died unm.) Sarah was sister of Calvin Delano who married Mary Alden, No. 895, second cousin of Seth Alden; and sister to Bethia Delano.

In Seth's first marriage intentions (1764) he was "of Middleborough"; in the second (1768) he was "of Dartmouth." He resided at Dartmouth until at least 10 October 1774, when he bought land in Middleborough from Joseph Alden, and presumably he removed to Middleborough shortly after.

On 9 February 1775 Barnabas Eaton of Middleborough gave to his sons Seth and Nathan Eaton, husbandmen of Middleborough, all of his homestead farm except that given to his six daughters and other two sons (Plymouth Co LR, 70:175).

Seth was a private in Massachusetts troops in the Revolutionary War (MF, 9:58, 10:66: DAR Patriot Index). He served in Capt. Joshua White's company, Col. Ebenezer Sprout's regiment which marched 8 December 1775 with service of 5 ays on an alarm at Howland's Ferry, Rhode Island. He also served in the same company and regiment from his enlistment of 6 May 1778 to 9 May on an alarm at Dartmouth; the roll was dated at Middleborough. He also served in Capt. Joshua White's company, Col. Ebenezer White's regiment; he enlisted on 1 August 1780 and was discharged on 4 August; the company marched to Tiverton, Rhode Island, on an alarm; the roll was sworn to at Middleborough (MSSR, 5:283).

Seth Eaton of Middleborough, husbandman, on 9 February 1775 received land from his father Barnabas Eaton. On 25 July 1791 Seth and Nathan Eaton both of Middleborough, yeomen, "having received a Deed jointly and severly of Our Honour father Barnabas Eaton late of Middleborough," divided their land: Seth Eaton, r., was a witness (Plymouth Co LR, 70:175-76, 73:143).

The 1790 census for Middleborough lists Seth Eaton with two males over age 16 and one female (M637-9, p. 358). The 1880 listing for Seth Eaton in Middleborough is too young (oldest male age 26-45, presumably his son); in 1810 the only listing is for Seth Eaton, Jr. In 1820, the family of Seth Eaton, Jr., included two males over age 45, one of which may be his father (M33-50, p.335).

Incidents at the Slosson Place
Among those who saw considerable of the British, even more than was agreeable, was Wi11am Slosson, who settled on a farm two miles south of Chazy village, in 1807. His son,
Horace Slosson, was then five years old, and has resided on the farm ever since. A portion if the original house, built In 1808, is still standing.
On the British advance, William S1osson was pressed into the service, with his team, to carry baggage from Chazy to Plattsburgh. On their retreat our militia captured five British soldiers and six horses In the vicinity. The British also "gobbled up" Mr. Slossson, and held him prisioner over one night.

FRITCHLEY, Carol Louise (I78056)

7850 Married Mary Benjamin, Aug. 16, 1695. He lived afterwards at Barnstable, then at Yarmouth, where he taught a school, being a well-educated man.

"Mr. John Clarke was a schoolmaster in Yarmouth in 1701, and besides his salary he was furnished with a horse, the school being movable from one village to another." --Freeman's Hist. of Cape Cod, Vol. 11., p. 206.

The Plymouth Records say that John Clarke, in 1681, testified that he was then about 30 years old; but whether this was the son of Thomas Clarke, the pilgrim, is a question. he died at yarmouth, Aug. 16, 175, aged 60.
